TFSA contribution room calculator

Work out your 2026 TFSA contribution room, including which withdrawals are already back in your room and which are waiting for January 1. The 2026 limit is $7,000, and anyone 18 or older since 2009 who has never contributed has $109,000. It's free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.

Room starts the year you turn 18, for the full year.

Newcomers accrue room from the year they arrive, not from 2009.

How we calculate this

We add up the annual limit for every year since 2009 in which you were 18 or older and a resident of Canada. Room accrues whether or not you ever filed a return or opened a TFSA, and the year you turn 18 counts in full, never prorated. Unused room carries forward indefinitely.

We then add your withdrawals from earlier years, which are already back in your room, and subtract everything you have ever contributed. Withdrawals from the current year are deliberately left out: they return on January 1 of the following year. Re-contributing before then is the most common cause of an over-contribution.

The calculation stops at 2026, the most recent year with a published limit. Results are a guide, not tax advice. Your situation may include things this tool does not model, such as non-resident years, transfers between institutions, or an excess amount already in place.

How much TFSA contribution room do I have?

Your room is the sum of the annual limits for every year you were 18 or older and resident in Canada, minus everything you have contributed, plus anything you withdrew in earlier years. Someone who turned 18 in 2009 and has never contributed has $109,000 in 2026. Nothing expires: unused room carries forward from year to year, indefinitely.

Two things catch people out. First, you accrue room even if you never filed a return or opened an account, as long as you were 18 and resident in Canada. Second, a withdrawal does not free up space right away: it comes back on January 1 of the following year. Take out $5,000 in March and put it back in July with no other room available, and that is an over-contribution taxed at 1% a month.

TFSA contribution limit by year

The annual limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500, apart from 2015, a one-off amount set in legislation. The table below gives every limit since the TFSA began, along with the running total for someone eligible in all of those years.

Why the CRA's own figure can be wrong

CRA My Account shows your contribution room, but that number is built from what your financial institutions have reported, and they report once a year. Contributions and withdrawals from the past few months may not be in it yet, and the figure is often dated January 1. If you have moved money this year, the CRA's number is probably behind what actually happened.

That is why it pays to keep your own count. Track your contributions and withdrawals through the year, compare against the CRA when its figure updates, and check before re-contributing a withdrawal. Where the two disagree, your own statements are the record that matters.

Frequently asked questions

How much TFSA contribution room do I have in 2026?

The 2026 annual limit is $7,000. If you were 18 or older in 2009, have been resident in Canada since, and have never contributed, you have $109,000, the sum of every annual limit since the TFSA began. If you have contributed before, subtract your total contributions and add back anything you withdrew in earlier years.

What happens if I over-contribute to my TFSA?

The CRA charges a tax of 1% a month on the highest excess amount in the month, for as long as the excess stays in the account. On a $3,000 excess that is $30 a month. The tax stops when you withdraw the excess, or when new room on January 1 absorbs it. Withdraw sooner rather than later: the tax runs by the month, not by the day.

When can I re-contribute money I withdrew?

On January 1 of the year after the withdrawal. Money taken out in 2026 comes back into your room on January 1, 2027, at the same time as the new annual limit. Putting it back before then only works if you already have other unused room. If you do not, it is an over-contribution taxed at 1% a month.

Does TFSA contribution room expire?

No. Unused room carries forward indefinitely. A year you skip is not a year you lose: its limit stays available for as long as you want. That is why someone who has never contributed since 2009 has the full $109,000 available today.

Do newcomers to Canada get TFSA room from 2009?

No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding a newcomer can have. You accrue room from the year you become a resident of Canada, or the year you turn 18 if that comes later. Arriving in 2024 at age 30 gives you the 2024, 2025 and 2026 limits, so $21,000, not $109,000. Enter your arrival year in the calculator above.

Is the CRA's contribution room figure accurate?

It is accurate as of January 1 and less so after that. CRA My Account is built from your financial institutions’ annual reporting, so recent contributions and withdrawals may not appear yet. Use it as a starting point, keep your own record during the year, and always check before re-contributing a withdrawal.
